We have highlighted some much loved herbs that you can grow in your kitchen garden and add to your plant-based dishes for accentuated taste.
Coriander
(Also known as cilantro, Chinese parsley, dhania)
Cilantro grows best on a raised bed. Soak the cilantro seeds in water for at least 24 hours and remove the water to dry them. Plant the seeds directly in your garden or in a planter. As long as it’s not freezing temperatures, cilantro grows well. Late spring and early summer are considered to be the best times for planting cilantro. Sunny spots are good for growing this wonder herb.
Did you know that the humble dhania leaves help in lowering anxiety and blood sugar levels? Cilantro also improves sleep and protects you against the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases.
Fenugreek
Sow fenugreek seeds directly in a wide planter or in your garden. They grow well in direct sunlight. A ¼ inch layer of soil works best for the seeds to germinate well. Fenugreek is well known for helping women manage their PMS symptoms, reducing inflammation and the risk of diabetes, and acting as natural antioxidants.
Basil
Basil can be grown from seeds as well as cuttings. A 4-6 inch long stem can be planted in a pot or directly in your garden. They grow easily but a good soil mixture with compost improves the condition of your plant.
Basil is well known for self-seeding and growing on its own when planted in a good spot with space around the plant. Basil has many health benefits such as it lowers cholesterol and triglycerides, improves skin health, improves liver function, cures fever, etc.
Mint
Use sharp scissors to cut 3-5 inches long stems and you can plant these easily in your kitchen garden or a pot. This is a herb that can easily be propagated and regrown several times. It’s easy to never run out of mint. This perennial herb is used in cooking a variety of dishes either in its fresh or dried form. Mint helps relieve indigestion, reduce inflammation, aids in weight loss, and improves oral hygiene.
Curry
Curry leaves are one of the most widely used culinary herbs in Indian dishes. Planting this in your kitchen garden is easy and you can even plant it in a pot/container. Buying a sapling is the easiest way to go about it but if you are keen on planting seeds, be prepared for a slightly challenging germination process.
Growing a curry plant from cuttings is easier and a 3-4 inches stem should suffice.
If you are planting seeds, do make sure that the seeds are a little damp and not too dry. Mix the soil with compost for better results. Avoid planting in direct sunlight and make sure the soil has proper drainage. Various herbal hair remedies are incomplete without adding this incredible herb. Apart from its culinary prowess, curry also helps improve digestion and strengthening hair.
